• Cookies and other tracking tools
  Cookies are text strings that websites (known as publishers or "first parties") visited by the user, or other websites or web servers (known as "third parties"), place and store—directly in the case of publishers and indirectly through them in the case of "third parties"—on a user's terminal device. These terminals may be, for example, a personal computer, a tablet, a smartphone, or any other device capable of storing information.
  Internet browsing software, such as browsers, can store cookies and then transmit them to the websites that originated them during subsequent visits by the same user. This keeps track of the user's previous interactions with one or more websites.
  The information encoded in cookies may include personal data, such as an IP address, username, unique identifier, or email address, but may also contain non-personal data, such as language settings or information about the type of device a person is using to browse the Site.
  Cookies can perform important functions such as computer authentication, session tracking, storing user settings, and facilitating the use of online content; for example, authentication cookies verify the identity of users. Furthermore, cookies allow tracking of items in a shopping cart or information in forms and support behavioral advertising, measuring its effectiveness.
  

• Types of cookies
  Cookies and tracking tools can have different temporal characteristics and can be classified based on their duration (session or permanent) or subjectively (depending on whether the publisher acts independently or on behalf of third parties). However, the classification that best meets user protection needs is based on three main categories.

  • Technical cookies , used for the sole purpose of "carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network, or to the extent strictly necessary for the provider of an information society service explicitly requested by the contractor or user to provide such service".

  • " Profiling cookies " are used to associate specific actions or behaviors with identifiable individuals, creating homogeneous groups (clusters). This allows targeted advertising messages to be sent in line with the user's browsing preferences.

  • “ Analytical cookies ” are also used to evaluate the effectiveness of an information society service provided by a publisher, to design a Site, or to help measure its “traffic,” i.e., the number of visitors, possibly broken down by geographic area, connection time slot, or other characteristics.
